I made a simple path (2 nodes), duplicated it, flipped horiz., and aligned them side by side. That was my skeleton for one side of the square. I duplicated that skeleton 3 times and arranged them symmetrically around a square. Then I used Stitch subpaths effect on pairs of paths, I paired a path with the one next to it's neighbour, and then repeated the stitching for every ("next to the neighbour") pair along the "square". I think I'll make a detailed tutorial about this as soon as I catch some time.

I did plan to stitch the border too, ether with straight stitches and somewhat randomized color (Tweak tool color jitter), or use the same pattern as in the center but the file size increased a lot when I tried to play with it, or the rendering was getting slow. I might do sth about it if I can do it on time, I also have another idea I want to submit....

Nice work. I really like the classical look the gold pattern and red/brown background makes. You could probably take it a little further with decorative borders/corners - but that might be too much.
